[Games] Pokemon: White Version (Part 2)

A followup to the previous review. I have some things to add to it.

---Designs:
When I posted a link to my initial review someone made a good point, which was... I completely left out my thoughts on the Pokemon in this game. So I'm going to rectify that by discussing the designs in this game. As a brief summary of character designs, I think they're fantastic. It's apparent as this franchise moves forward, the style of clothing for the characters has evolved. They've gone from being fairly regular and based in real life to becoming more widespread and fantasy-esque. I like 'em myself. Coupled with the writing and all, they make characters more memorable to me. This is the first time since Generation 1 that I've actually liked specific characters. But that's besides the point.

This new set of Pokemon, in my experience, has been the most controversial. Granted, I've seen people say with Generation 4, "This is the worst thing ever, they need to kill this franchise, it's so horrible look at it no wait don't look at it ahhhhh"... Hyperbole to the extreme. That's what I see with this Generation as well. And to be honest... It's all about opinion. I think the designs are fine, they've got some nice variety. As with characters, this is the first time since Generation 1 I've actually managed to see and recognize everything from this Generation. With 2, 3 and 4 I sometimes have to stop and ask myself, "Which game is this one from again?" Here I have a clearer idea.

I think that if you're not into 'em that's all fine, but I think that we're far from seeing an end to the franchise.

---WiFi content:
WiFi content is something I barely take interest in and I've only skimmed some of it. However I will say, the trading system is rad. You are no longer limited to trading what's in your party - You can now select things from your PC boxes. It makes things a lot easier. I may go back and edit this if I check out battles and such.

---Dream World:
This is a gimmick that was advertised a LOT in Japan from what I understand. It was never totally clear to me what the point of it was, so I had to try it out. Luckily, they seem to have completely imported the system for it with an identical website setup. You have to get an account on their website to make it work, but it's free so no trouble there.

In the Dream World you can send one of your Pokemon to the website (Once a day), which is more or less a proxy to send your obtained stuff on the site back to your game. As far as I know that's the ONLY purpose it serves, I haven't seen any reward or variation of gameplay for it.

But anyway, in the Dream World you can explore a forest area (later you can unlock two other areas) and encounter random Pokemon. They will allow you to play mini-games, and if you win said mini-game, you unlock the option (for this session) to take a Pokemon back to the game file with you. It's hard to explain, but that's the punchline here. This allows you to obtain some Pokemon that may not be obtainable within the game, and to top it off, they come with an Ability that that particular Pokemon can't have otherwise. It can lead to some good strategy. In addition to that you can find berries and other items in the area.

Some people ask what the point of Dream World is. That's about it. Some Pokemon you can't obtain due to version exclusives or what have you, and it seems to also be a good place to get lots of berries. You can also customize the house you have if you've got lots of berries to use as currency. Overall, though, it's moreso a fun waste of time if anything. Probably more fun for the kids than the adults.

---Final Thoughts:
And there you have it. A complete review of Pokemon White. Make of it what you will.
