Yet another Kre-O set! I have officially been abducted by this toyline. Let's dive right in.
This is a set I wanted for a while but only just picked up. What I experienced with Jazz told me this was definitely a toyline worth checking out, and with this and the next review... yeah, it's a pretty sweet toyline. But I will address some issues I had, of course.
Mirage, while having a Dark Of The Moon counterpart with a production codename, is based on his G1 counterpart this time 'round, thus making him a formula-1 race car. I like the way these cars look and because of that, always took a liking to Mirage in his various incarnations. This one is a nice, hefty car.
Robot mode looks greeeat. In particular I like how they give him a bit of asymmetry with the front cone piece as a single arm piece. The same articulation from Jazz is present here, showing me that the $10 price point is going to have this level of quality across the board, but it does enough to work.
The Kreons included with this guy mimic that of Jazz, with Drive Racer and a self-insert Mirage. Mirage has a really nasty look on his face, it adds some character. He comes with the same gun Jazz has but in black. Drive Racer... well I guess one thing that I can say is, he lacks an addition piece of headgear like Jazz's driver, which I find odd.
This guy does not give me the same quick building process I got from Jazz. I'd dare say this one was more complex, with a lot of parts going into places that don't quite make sense during the building process, whereas with Jazz you kinda knew what you were doing. Lots of sticker work here too, which I was a bit cautious with. But I'll get to that in the next review where it's more relevant.
As I continue getting more Kre-O sets I notice some inconsistencies here and there. Out of the instruction booklet falls a sheet of paper which lists all of the parts, very useful if you were to, say, mix these all into one set. Jazz didn't come with one of these, however, which I find odd. I assume it was a running change.
Also, I don't know if it was just me or not, but the instructions AND part list feature a 2x4 white plate, which is completely missing from this set. I opened all of the bags carefully and made sure not to spill any of them anywhere, so I find it odd that this missing part rather perplexing. In any case, I've got a few Lego pieces laying around so I have a Lego piece used in its place, which fits in perfectly. An example of how the Kre-O toys, in fact, do work with leading brands, just like the box says! Haaa...
Knowing the differences in complexity between these two, I would definitely recommend Jazz to someone who wants something simple to start with, and Mirage to someone who just wants a solid Kre-O set. The vehicle mode looks great, robot mode works well, and the process in between takes just enough time to make you feel like you're accomplishing something.
