This review is brought to you by Canada! The brilliant General Tekno, who got this guy in the Straightaway Shootout 5-pack, and didn't need the figure, so he sent it my way.
Onward... TO THE REVIEW!
To give a bit of a let-you-know on this review, Seibertron.com does not currently have a gallery for this particular version of the toy, so I'll be using pictures of the original mold. Paint changes will be mentioned, don't worry!
Ironhide is a truck like always. This figure is still basically in Ironhide's colors, but there's some minor differences. The biggest one being the fact that he's not actually black, but rather a very dark grey. Not a bad thing really, because it's not noticeable unless you look at it in the right light. Also, the windows are a light blue as opposed to the dark blue in this image. He's also got silver on the headlights now, and a tiny Autobot symbol on the top right side of the hood. Other than that not much else is different.
Okay, so aside from the paint details, I have not much else to say other than the truck looks a little longer than I figured it would be. But that might just be me. A thing I REALLY don't like is that this guy stays together through friction: The legs peg together, and everything else is just staying together due to tight-ish ball joints. It doesn't seem very well constructed in that sense.
In robot mode the paint apps are much different than the ones presented in the image here. The crotch piece is left unpainted, the legs actually have added silver, and the chest is also left unpainted. I'm thinking it could've used that painted chest, but the painted legs really help the detail on them pop. I may take a go at the chest with a Gundam marker.
But the robot mode itself is pretty cool! If I had to complain about something here, it's a similar argument I had with the alt mode, in that the chest has no particular way of staying together, it's all just friction. But other than that, it looks nice.
Overall, if you're a fan of Ironhide, this might be a nice little addition to your collection. I would say that this figure has a major issue of friction-based locking - Eventually, this will be a very loose figure that can't do anything right. But as it is, it looks nice, has character, and hey - the legs are static but are in a hunched pose. I like that. And you should too!
