I will just say here that Jazzfoxrules, well, rules. This was given to me in a bundle of comics her cousin bought for me at Auto Assembly. I had the original team before, but... Well, onto the review.
Ah, Mini-Cons; The Pokemon of Transformers. I remember the days when I said to myself, "I'll collect em all, that's a good idea!" ... and today most of them are either repainted or broken, or just too crappy for me to care about letting them see daylight. I keep a few close to my heart, though. And I have to admit, these guys will probably be kept solely for their awesomeness.
Let's begin with the first one, shall we?
Sonar here is the most intricate of the three, for better or for worse. I have a pretty heavy bias against Mini-Cons when it comes to complexity and overall appearance, but I like the way this guy looks, especially in black and purple, it's downright sexy.
The transformation on this guy is alright, I always liked how the legs worked and because of how they work for the different modes, he has some nice articulation down there. Wish I could say the same for the shoulders because he looks a bit uncomfortable with how close his arms are to his body, but I guess at the time, this one was one of the better ones?
Next here is Runway. He's a jet. A pretty nice jet, at that. One thing I'll say here is, I really like this color they picked for this and the next one; it isn't quite white but isn't quite grey, it's a sort of dirty looking color that works for me.
This robot mode has to be my least favorite of the trio, but the dark grey they picked REALLY compliments the white and gold colors, giving him this cool antagonistic color scheme. The fact that he's essentially an all-white jet that turns into a mostly black robot is pretty cool too. Not much to say on articulation, though he does have nice knee joints which is nice.
Remember Apeface? I do. And Jetstorm's color scheme reminds me of him a LOT. This exact white/grey color mixed with black and purple really makes me wonder if someone was thinking of him when they chose these colors. Also? This is an awesome alt mode. Got a lot of bulk underneath due to the robot legs, but the molding on the top is gorgeous. I always liked this kind of plane design for some reason. This toy does a lot that I like.
Robot mode is not really as Apeface-esque as the plane, I honestly would've liked to have seen more paint work here since it feels pretty blank. But I DO like the design of it. It's a fairly simple transformation, but it looks rather nice in the end.
So, what do these guys do that is so cool?
The DARK SABER. This is a sword made of DARKNESS. Or so I assume. Never really got that far in Armada, I just happened to see this sword in it when channel-surfing. If there's one thing I would've liked, it's to see a more uniform color scheme on the overall team. While I do love the gorgeous white they used, without the purple on Jetstorm, it would feel like two regular guys and one evil guy. But I think they were attempting to make Jetstorm and Runway white so they could form a sort of quasi-blade. I'll accept it if that's the case.
Also, yes, the current TF figures can still hold this thing, it has that peg size for the handle. Though if your figure has weak joints, you might have some trouble with it.
So overall, I'm pleased with this guy. Under any other circumstance I wouldn't buy them because I didn't quite like their color schemes enough to want them, but seeing them in person makes me realize just how nice the colors actually are. If you didn't know about the original Star Saber set, look at the one on the far right up there; yeah, mostly clear plastic. I don't know what they were going for, but it always felt odd to me. I'm glad to have a set of these guys with solid colors on them, because they feel like entirely new toys, and better ones at that. Wonder if I can make the original Saber 100% clear, though... hmm.
Anywho, I'm going to bed now. Thanks for reading!
